Split Rock
Carolyn Zonailo
Caitlin Press,
Vancouver, B.C.
1979
A chapbook collection of poems, including two long poems, “False
Passage” and “The Dreamkeeper”, which was scored
by jazz pianist Al Neil and performed at Pump’s Gallery
with Al Neil and Howard Broomfield. Contains unique prose poems
and lyric poetry. This is the early work in a poet’s lifelong
career dedicated to the Muse.
Critical Praise for Split Rock
“Split Rock, by
Carolyn Zonalo, is the subtle, profound exploration of a universal
theme, expressed by cohesive symbols, some archetypal, some ingeniously
invented by Zonalo. She is indelibly a West Coast poet with her
concern for roots and natural symbolism, which she uses to delve
deeply into the primal scream of history.”
Kathy Tyler, Germination
“At her best Carolyn Zonailo
writes with a clear, clean polish. ‘False Passage’
and ‘The Dreamkeeper’ are substantial achievements…
It is gratifying to observe the native style so spontaneously,
and so unselfconsciously present in the work of a younger poet
of unquestionable talent.”
